About Us
Why We Started
Our Founder and Head of Operations, Trent, has always been very invested in horticulture. For as long as I can remember, there have been expansive gardens with almost any vegetable you could imagine right out in the yard. It wasn’t until a fifth-grade project of mine to incubate and hatch baby chicks that we considered getting animals on the “farm”. With nowhere to go, we took in the baby chicks from the school project, and looking back now, it was the best decision we could’ve made. Those five or so chicks quickly turned into ten, then fifteen, then twenty, and so on until it grew to a flock of about 50 laying hens that we have now (and we’re not even done yet!) From the chickens, we added goats to the property and learned in short order that they would clear out the overgrown, thick brush that had run rampant over the past 15 years.
With some property now cleared, we were able to add pigs. At the beginning, we raised a pig for our family and another for a close family friend. After a couple of years of doing that, we had progressed to raising about five pigs a year for a handful of family friends and coworkers. Once we’d figured out the pigs’ cycle, we were looking for something else. It didn’t take long for us to figure out that broiler chickens were the most logical next step. One weekend in 2016, you could’ve found my dad, my brother, and me out in the backyard constructing a mobile chicken tractor. With right around fourteen acres and only four of it being open pasture, we figured that while the goats and pigs do their job clearing some more future pasture land, the chickens can have the best life imaginable in the already thriving pasture. By moving them daily and finding a phenomenal non-GMO grain supplier, we were very fortunate to raise the best chicken possible.
After a couple of years, we were able to find our groove raising chicken and pork for our family and friends. A few years in, we also began raising Thanksgiving turkeys. We got to the point where we felt comfortable with the rate at which our animals were growing for meat and were looking to expand. That’s where We Grow R Own was born. We started growing a few more batches of broiler chickens and pigs with the same care, intention, and pride, but this time with the goal of selling the meat. In the Spring of 2026, we began attending local farmers’ markets and tried our hand at selling our product. To be entirely honest, our first swing at these markets was a little discouraging. With only a few customers who would trickle by and, from them, even fewer who would buy something, we began to wonder what we were doing wrong. Little did we know that by the end of the 2026 market season, we would have regular customers seeking us out at these markets! We are so thankful to those of you who buy our products or come over and talk to us at markets, and especially to those who truly believe in what we are trying to do at We Grow R Own, which basically boils down to raising non-GMO, pasture-raised meats the way God intended for them to be raised, while avoiding the chemicals of large-scale commercial growers.
Our Goal
In the summer of 2026, we added a small herd of sheep to our farm. With the herd of sheep, we also added a few baby ewes as well as a ram for breeding stock. With the breeding stock, we intend to have our own lamb available under the We Grow R Own guarantee of quality and assurance of its ethical raising. Our lamb is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, getting nutrients from the land and returning nutrients to it!
Coming soon in 2026, we will also be adding a couple of beef cows and a bull to offer 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef. We have had more than a few questions about our beef availability…or lack thereof, and we have listened and are responding. Our intentions with the beef are the same as with the lamb: to raise them to be nurtured by the land while, in turn, nurturing the land.
Those are the short-term goals for the farm. Down the road, our overarching goal is to feed our family and the community from our land. We want everyone to have the opportunity to eat the best possible food while also giving back to the land it is raised on. By creating a biodiverse ecosystem on our property, we can ensure you get nothing but the absolute best meats while also nurturing the environment in which they were raised!
